Horsham racing car driver Neville Eltze has won the Victorian Standard Sportsman championship race.
He defeated about 30 of Victoria’s top Standard Sportsman drivers for the title at Warrnambool’s Laang Speedway Club track on Sunday.
Eltze, who drew 14th position at the start of the final, showed great skill in overtaking the leaders to win by about 25 metres.
Driving his Natimuk Motors sponsored Sportsman, Red Chariot 2, he proved a class above the rest of the field over the 25-lap course. Eltze won $50 cash, a 25 voucher from a Warrnambool Dairy Products factory and a sash.
Five other Horsham drivers competed in the championship.
Keith Baker finished seventh, Rex Koenig eighth and Ron Whitford ninth. Eric Davison and Col McDonald were forced to drop out of the race because of mechanical faults.
Two Horsham drivers competed at a Hamilton speedway meeting for saloon cars on Sunday. Peter Spokes won two first, a second and a third.
Marion Kowarzik finished fifth in the Victorian Women’s Standard Saloon car championship race .
