Competitors battled windy conditions during a Horsham Motor Sports Club meeting at Blue Ribbon Raceway circuit at Kalkee. Despite the weather, motorcyclists provided the feature entertainment of the day, the club’s season opener.
B Solo rider Anthony Butchman of Melbourne, missing from racing for most of last season with a pin in his leg, rode strongly to be top point scorer in his section. He led for three laps in the final but crashed in the final lap.
Fans at Horsham’s Blue Ribbon Raceway flocked to see Australian Motor Car Association cars in action for only the second time in Victoria.
Raceway publicity officer Di Bell said many drivers and crew members competing in other classes were keen to inspect the new class of speedway cars. AMCA races promote drivers’ ability rather than technological know-how. Only 250cc V8 Holden engines are allowed.
The canteen is in place, the toilets have arrived and Horsham Motor Sports Club members are ready to roll with the official opening of their new Blue Ribbon Raceway on Saturday night. A church minister will bless the track during an opening ceremony and district drivers will be introduced to the crowd before cars roar into action.
The opening, from 7pm, will mark a triumph for club and community workers who have devoted countless volunteer hours shaping the new track and surrounds on the Blue Ribbon Road, north of Horsham.
