Baker Breaks The Ice

Baker Breaks the IceKeith Baker, of Horsham, broke through for his first win in five years of racing when he won a Standard Sportsman event at Hamilton car races on Sunday. Driving Graeme Muller’s car, Baker put in his best performance to take the honours in a class field.

In a successful meeting for Horsham Motor Sports club they gained 27 placings. Ray Harris was second in the A grade Saloon event, the feature race of the day. In the B grade Saloons the Bell brothers gained a first, second and third. Steve Minne a first and two-thirds, Peter Spokes, Robert Emmett, Denis Fraser and Colin Keam each seconds, and Leon Ellis a third.

Gladys Bell gained a first and a third in the Women’s Races. Neville Eltze continued his winning form with three-firsts and a third in the Standard Sportsman section.

Kevin Baker finished with a first, a second and third. Percy Puls broke through for his first win of the season and also gained a second. Ron Frew and Peter Mirtshin gained seconds and Graeme Muller a third placing.

Eltze gained two-firsts and second and finished sixth in the feature race at Portland on Saturday night, and Ron Frew was fourth in the feature event.

Horsham speedway drivers had a successful weekend competing at Portland, Warrnambool and Hamilton tracks.

Marion Kowarzike, competing in her first races for the season, won the only ladies’ race on Saturday night at Warrnambool and gained two thirds at Hamilton on Sunday.

Col Keam, in his first Standard Saloon car race, gained a first, a second and two thirds at Portland on Saturday night and finished third in the Standard Sportsman Aggregate for the night. He also had a first, two seconds and a third at the Hamilton raceway.

Keith Baker, in his new car, competing at Portland for the first time, gained a thirds and was sixth in the aggregate.

Ron Frew, in his Standard Sportsman, gained two first and a third at Hamilton despite tough competitions from local drivers. Gary Frew also managed to gain a third placing.

Ray Harris, competing in the A Grade Standard Saloon event at Hamilton was first.

First Wins For Drivers

Horsham racing car drivers Kevin Baker and Peter Mirtschin scored their first wins for the season at a Hamilton meeting at the weekend.

Baker and Mirtschin both members of Horsham Motor Sports Club, each took a first place in the Standard Sportsman section.

More than 60 cars from as far as Warrnambool, Portland, Coleraine, Hamilton, Horsham, Stawell and Mortlake competing at the meeting.

An official of the Horsham club said yesterday it was the best day’s racing for the season. He said cars raced under excellent conditions. A large crowd attended the meeting and there was strong competition in all races.
