Horsham Motor Sports Club celebrated twenty years of racing at Blue Ribbon Raceway on Saturday. Speedway drivers from all corners of Victoria and South Australia made the journey to help celebrate the Kalkee track.

On top of the bill was the Victorian Modified Production Association who was also celebrating 20 years of association.

Heat race wins were shared between Graham West of Bendigo, Jeff Leahy and Darren Cockerill of Geelong and Jake Drewett of Mildura

Current ASCF Junior driver Brock Atkins of Hamilton did well stepping up into a Modified Productions sedan for the first time, also claiming a win on the night.

Home town favourite, Daniel Simspson, in his brand new Commodore was successful, claiming two wins and a second position over his three heat races.

There were several attempts to start the Modified Production feature race as the drivers were very eager, resulting in several multi-car accidents in the first corner.

Simpson jumped out in front quickly and lead the race from the first lap. West was the first to challenge him as he worked his way through the field. Martin Hawson of Mildura was next to catch up and threaten Simpson, but a stoppage with 10 laps to go, allowed Simpson to regather his momentum after the restart and clearly won the race followed by Hawson and West respectively.

Limited Sportsman drivers contested over the four heats during the night to qualify their starting positions in the feature race. Recently crowned state champion Jock Backer of Pimpinio ruled the heats claiming two wins. Adrian Christian of Horsham also drove extremely well during the second heat, earning a first position. Ballarat driver Mick Rizolli drove well managing a win.

The Les McMaster memorial race was raced over 18 laps and looked like a repeat of the previous weekends Victorian Championship race to begin with. Baker led from the start with Christian close behind and Minyip driver Adam McKenzie in third. Unfortunately Christian retired after ten laps and McKenzie stepped up to take his position.

Baker went on to win the race with McKenzie claiming second, Rizolli third.

Horsham V8 Truck Driver, Luke James took out three wins for the evening in his class, but he certainly had to work for it. Fletcher Mills of Kalkee, Dean Thomas of Sailors Home and Brendan Jackson of Warracknabeal all took turns claiming second in their respective heats.

Saturday night was the last chance for the local Street Stock drivers to get some practice before heading to Ballarat for the Australian Title next weekend. The three heat races also attracted several other visiting drivers from across the state. Swan Hill Driver Kevin Apps earned the first heat race win. Luke James’ Ford Falcon was given a last minute dyno tune during the day, which was beneficial as he won the remaining two heat races.

Nine Vintage Heavy Hot Rods completed the evening providing some racing demonstrations from yesteryear.

Horsham Motor Sport Club look forward to their next race meeting to be held on April 23rd. The evening will feature Formula 500 and the annual Street Stock 1000.
